Fallen Angels

Do lok tin si
Dir. Wong Kar Wai
Hong Kong 1995, 99’
Subtitles: Polish

The assassin Wong Chi-Ming gets instructions for the next job from his long-time partner. Even though the two of them never met, they act in perfect synchrony. For the woman, being the shadow of the nonchalant gangster becomes an impulse to spin the web of increasingly daring fantasies. Their story is woven into the ragged trajectory of the fate of the dumb Ho Chi Mo, who breaks into small shops at night to sell the merchandise. The man lives with his father and is constantly bumping into Charlie who is crying over her broken heart and cursing her cheating boyfriend.

In 1990, Days of Being Wild, depicting the youth of that mythical Hong Kong of the 60s, won five top prizes at the Hong Kong Film Awards. He then directed Ashes of Time. In 1994, Chungking Express was the first of his films to break through into wide international distribution. One year later, Fallen Angels consolidated his position as one of the most innovative storytellers of our times. In 1997, Happy Together earned the Best Director Prize at Festival de Cannes and in 2000 Tony Leung walked away with the Best Actor Prize for In the Mood for Love, also in Cannes.
