About the performance

On 3 June 1924, Marx Brod’s good friend Franz Kafka passed away.

My will is simple – I want you to burn everything I leave behind.

Brod is distressed by his friend’s will…

The story depicts the struggle within Max Brod when Kafka asks him to destroy seven boxes of his works with a flame before he dies. In front of these seven boxes containing the literature legacy of Kafka, Max Brod wonders what to do. Betray a best friend or his faith in literature? Seven Boxes Possessed of Kafka gathers a full range of Kafka’s creative ideas and he is outlined 3-dimentionally through Devising Theatre with the help of multi-media technology, experimental music, vigorous visual impact on stage and powerful performing style. What is presented to the audience is a multi-layer version of this avant-garde literature writer.

Premiered in 2008, Seven Boxes Possessed of Kafka was awarded Best Director (Tragedy/ Drama), Best Sound Design, Best Make-up Image and Top 10 Most Popular Productions Award at the 18th Hong Kong Drama Awards; the production was also awarded Best Play Script, Best Director, Best Leading Actress, Best Stage Effects and Best Ensemble at the 1st Hong Kong Theatre Libre. The show was rerun in 2009 & 2017 with full houses of audience. Upon invitation, the show toured to Shanghai, Beijing, Macau and Taipei. It was well received with critical acclaim.
